The clips are permanent rather than expiring, they are public by design, and Snapchat keeps each one at several resolutions. Why Spotlight is the easiest thing to save
Spotlight is Snapchat's public, algorithmic feed — its answer to TikTok and Reels. The resolution ladder, and picking from it
Snapchat encodes a Spotlight clip several times over so it can adapt to a viewer's connection. A typical clip exists at something like 360p, 480p, 720p and 1080p on the vertical axis. Most tools pick one for you, usually not the best one.

Spotlight to MP4, without re-encoding

What a Spotlight link looks like
Spotlight URLs follow a predictable shape —
snapchat.com/spotlight/ followed by an opaque identifier. Links copied
from inside the app sometimes carry tracking parameters after a
?; those are harmless and can be left on. A
t.snapchat.com short link works too, since it redirects to the same
place.
What will not work is a screenshot of a link, or a URL for a clip the creator has since removed. If a clip has been deleted there is nothing left on the page to resolve, and that is indistinguishable from a link that was never valid.
Where the file lands, and using it well
On desktop the clip goes to your normal downloads folder. On Android it appears in Downloads and shows up in your gallery shortly after. On iPhone and iPad it lands in Files under Downloads rather than in Photos — move it across from there. That last detail accounts for most reports of a download having failed on iOS when it actually succeeded.
One closing point. Spotlight creators are publishing to be watched, and saving a clip to watch offline is ordinary. Re-uploading it as your own is not, whatever the feed's norms suggest.
